♦ Elder Miller week 28 (2-27-23)
Bon Siman Tur!
Hey! How are you all doing? Hope this last week was great for all of you! I am having a good time! This week we had a hard time getting our friends to follow through with lessons. We have been doing a lot of service lately and we have been able to meet a lot of cool people and make some new friends from it. This coming week is our zone conference which I am super excited about.
Speaking of service, this last Saturday all the Elders on the island got together to clean up a newly leased building the church has for a bigger branch service on the south end of the island. It was sweet to take this run down building and get it prepped to be the new building for the people down there. It'll be way cool coming back and seeing it fully up and running. The branch down there is getting so big which is so fun to see.
This week too we had a branch activity that involved some food which definitely got the missionaries way excited. One lady in the branch was quick to offer all of us missionaries her dish which was a tooth pick which looked like it had a piece of meat wrapped in bacon on it. I wasn't going to turn down this ladies food, and the bacon looked pretty good so I didn't think twice about it and threw it all in my mouth. Man... I couldn't even taste the bacon. While she was handing another to my companion I went and jugged some water. Turns out it was chicken liver and I don't know if it was under cook or what, but I was not a having it. So sweet of her to make it though.
Every Saturday night for the past few weeks we have been going to a public park and organizing some basketball games with the other Elders and we have been getting some inactive boys and all their friends to come. It has been sweet and this last week was the first time we had enough dudes to run a game full court. Pretty fun and all the little kids think that we are crazy good which is pretty fun. We have even started meeting parents and we hope to start teaching one family pretty soon!
We also tried a fun activity this last week where we went down to the busy part of the sisters area and we took a white board and had people come write who Jesus Christ is to them. It was cool and we got some phone numbers. Also a man came up to us and said he was baptized a long time ago in the church, but he seemed like he wanted to come back. It was neat too because he got all excited when he saw my name badge and he told us that it was an Elder Miller who baptized him.
Our mission had Elder Nielsen of the seventy come and give a devotional this week in Guyana. We were on a zoom link here in Aruba and it was so good! I have a testimony of the leadership we have in this church. He spoke to our mission and his message was exactly what we needed here. Gets me stoked for General Conference coming up here in April.
One quick thought I had while I was reading in the book of Mosiah chapter 26 in the Book of Mormon...
18 Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine.
I love this verse. It is pretty powerful to think we can show our commitment to God by being "willing" to take upon His name. When a person is baptized by the proper authority in God's restored church today, they covenant with Him to do just that. Our prophet has just recently taught us that people who are willing to let God prevail in their lives and hold true to their covenants will receive true and lasting joy, and power. God's power! My invitation this week is to remember those sacred covenants you have made and recommit to remembering them in all you do:).
Go kill it this week, and make a new friend! Thanks for all the love and emails. Each one means so much to me!
Te oro
-Elder Miller
