Elder Miller week 79 (2-19-24)
Good afternoon (but you gotta say it with a British accent) That's how you greet people here in Guyana!🤙🇬🇾
Wow, what a week. It has been probably the craziest week of my mission but I'll try to keep it quick...
On my transfer flight over to Guyana I had a layover in Panama for 7 hrs and was able to get permission from my mission president to go to the temple in Panama City! I can't really even express that experience. So neat. In my mission there are no temples so missionaries wait two years before being able to go to the temple. It was a miracle how it all worked out and honestly one of my favorite parts of my mission.
Guyana. Where to start? This place is crazy, the culture, the country, it's all so unique. First off, the people here are some of the most humble and kind people I have ever met. Especially the members in my branch. They are so fun. The climate here is a lot like the islands, but maybe a little more humid. I feel it on a bike.
It is pretty in a way because it is very green but on both sides of every street here are these things they call 'trenches'. There is zero plumbing here and so everything goes out and through villages in these little channels. So it doesn't always smell super nice. But I've been told I'll get use to it. All houses are built up on stilts and you drive on the left side which has my brain upside down.
It still definitely has a Caribbean vibe here. The people speak similar English to a Jamaican accent and many of the Guyanese people speak a dialect called 'creolese'. I am officially learning a different language. There is English in it but squished together and far inbetween. Its fun to hear them get going but I legit don't understand what some people say.
Some parts of it make me sad because the quality of living is pretty poor. There are some pretty valiant people here though and it is humbling to see.
A quick scripture from the Book of Mormon...
1 Nephi 13:37
37 And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb; and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains shall they be.
Keep enduring! And along the way reach out to those whose hands hang low. It starts with following the promptings of the Holy Ghost!
Have a super week! Sorry I don't have too many Guyana pictures yet but next week for sure!
